“Gingham Blanket”

By Brenda Allen Moser

        E                    A

1. We drove to the lake, we took a basket--

 C                    D         E

Sandwiches, pop, and ice cream bars.

    E                A

We parked out by the open shore side

             C       D            E

So we could sit and look at the stars

      E                   A

And there was peace and quiet

       G                 E

Just still to share our love

   G                 C

A gingham blanket below us

     D                 E

And just the heavens above

        E                        A

2. We drove to the lakeside and parked the car

  C           D         E

Twice a week,    maybe more

     E                    A

To think of dreams, our plans and schemes

        C                D       E

And pretended it was the ocean shore

      E                  A

And there was peace and quiet

     G                         E

And time seemed to hold real still

          G          C

With our basket and gingham blanket

         D                    E

And the time of our lives to kill

3. We drove to the lake and I felt a chill

The trip was made under a hush

The silence was deaf

and the heavens caved in

And I got lost in all the rush

And there was peace and quiet

I stared at you and you looked at me

The gingham blanket went into the trunk

And the things we couldn’t stand to see

(Instrumental verse)

       E                   A

4. I drove to the lake, I parked the car

      C      D        E

only minutes at the shore

    E                        A

I threw the gingham blanket out the car window

        C          D    E

I will not need it any more.
